Fall 2022 MAT225 Lectures 102 & 103:
Yippee! We actually finished all the new material for this unit.
Lecture 101, last week on Wednesday 9/6/2022, was all about Vectors: cartesian coordinates, polar coordinates, magnitude, direction, adding 2 Vectors, subtracting 2 vectors, multiplying a Vector by a Scalar, Dot Products and Cross Products.
Lecture 102, Monday 9/12/2022 this week, was all about Matrices. Just as we did with Vectors, we introduced Matrix Arithmetic: adding 2 Matrices, subtracting 2 Matrices, multiplying a Matrix by a Scalar as well as multiplying a Matrix by another Matrix. Then we talked a bit about Determinants, Matrix Inverses and Matrix Algebra solving Systems of 3 Equations with 3 Unknowns.
Lecture 103, Wednesday 9/14/2022 this week, saw some more practice with Vectors and Matrices as well as an introduction to 3D graphing using sympy's plot3d and plot3d_parametric_line. Don't be fooled, plot3d_parametric_line will plot lines in 3D:
<1+2t, 2-3t,5+t>.
However, plot3d_parametric_line will plot any parametrically defined trajectory, or any vector valued function R=>R^3, that has 1-Degree of Freedom such as a helix:
<4cos(t), 4sin(t), 3t>.
We found the Equation of a Line using Vector Addition given a starting point and a parallel vector. We also found the Equation of a Plane given 3 Points using Cross Products and Dot Products:
ax+by+cz=d
I would have liked to have touched on Quadric Surfaces, Contour Plots, Traces or Level Curves, but we ran out of time. We won't need these topics on our first test anyway. We'll get to that in the next unit. Each unit is about 3 weeks long, 2 days per week and 2 hours per day:
UNIT01: Vectors & Matrices
UNIT02: Partial Derivatives
UNIT03: Iterated Integrals
UNIT04: The Great Theorems
UNIT05: Review & Final
Don't forget our Elementary Calculus Reviews and related FILKs (see below):
REVIEWA: Limits
REVIEWB: Difference Quotient
REVIEWC: Product Rule
As you know, I like to start each Lecture with a brief review. These reviews do not represent an exhaustive review of Calculus I & II by any means. At least we remind ourselves of some important skills and we have a good warm up each day! Still feels weird calling the equivalent of AP Calculus AB & BC elementary as I taught AP for several decades and my students would not think it so elementary!
Next week, before our next unit covering Partial Differentiation, we will review preTEST1A on Monday 9/19/2022 in Break Out Rooms and take a proctored TEST1B on Wednesday 9/21/2022 covering Lectures 101-103 as detailed above. So I won't have anything to blog about until the following week: Friday 9/30/2022!
Elementary Calculus FILKs:
Last, but not least, remember this unit's mascot, Tux the Penguin of Linux fame, is here to cheer you on!
That's it for now. I hope you find this note is helpful and I hope that you will learn a lot this semester in my class!
Be well,
