preCalculus Honors 2018-2019: Linear Models, Quadratic Functions, Polynomials (September)

preCalculus Honors 2018-2019:
Linear Models
Quadratic Functions
Polynomials
(September)

We usually start the school year reviewing all of Trigonometry since CC Algebra II doesn't do it justice anymore! However, September was all about reviewing topics that my students should already know! We worked on word problems using Linear (CH01) and Quadratic (CH02) Models. Playing with Linear and Quadratic Regressions was fun too. We are now starting Polynomial Functions (CH04) which we will finish in the first week of October. Quarter I will finish with Exponential & Logarithmic Functions (CH05) plus a Quarterly Exam.

Chapter 1 ScreenCasts

We reworked the entire curriculum so as to make it more of an Honors approach. BTW, we'll devote all of Quarter II to Trigonometry (CH06-CH09).

Note that we leave CH03 for later in the year as it lends itseIf to a treatment of Limits before we start introducing Calculus. Also, I encourage students to follow my TI84 or my SAGE ScreenCasts, it's their choice!

Chapter 2 ScreenCasts

This year will continue the tradition:
MCQ Mondays
SAGE Tuesdays
YouTube Wednesdays
Think Pair Share Thursdays
FRQ Fridays

Chapter 4 ScreenCasts

MCQ Mondays will started in September. Even months we will do practice MCQ Exams using Formative Assessments via Socrative. On odd months we will have actual Mock MCQ Exams as Summative Assessments.

SAGE Tuesdays will make use of Pythonic Math reasoning whenever possible, instead of the TI84C.

YouTube Wednesdays are famous for STEAM related Filks as well as month-long documentaries (5-10 inutes each Wednesday).

ThinkPairShare Thursday is a review day. Students get into groups of 2 or 3 with a WhiteBoard to help each other complete HomeWork questions they had trouble with.

FRQ Fridays occur at the end of every 2-3 week unit. On Friday I give a preTEST review sheet. We go over it in Think Pair Share style. The real TEST, similar to the preTEST, is then given at the end of the period as a TakeHome Exam due the following Tuesday.

Last, but not least, I'm starting each month with a Filk for YouTube Wednesday. For the next several months, we'll be concentrating on the infamous Tom Lehrer. Remaining Wednesdays each month will be devoted to educational STEAM related  documentaries from PBS (Nova) and National Geographic (Star Talk TV).

1st YouTube Wednesday: Tom Lehrer

AP Calculus BC 2018-2019: Limits Derivatives Applications (September)

AP Calculus BC 2018-2019:
Limits
Derivatives
Applications
(September)

September was all about reviewing topics that my students should already know! We talked about Limits (UNIT02) and Derivatives (UNIT03) Models. To do these units justice we studied Limits at Infinity and Limits at a Point. Making the connection between Removable Discontinuities and the Difference Quotient Limit is key!

UNIT02 ScreenCasts

We are now starting Applications of Derivatives (UNIT04) which we will finish during the first two weeks of October. Quarter I will finish with Definite Integrals and Riemann Sums(UNIT05) plus a Quarterly Exam. We're loving our class set of TI nSPire CX CAS Graphing Calculators from Donorschoose, BTW!

AP CompSci A 2018-2019:
Bits & Bytes
HelloWorld.java
Object Based Programming
(September)

September was all about introducing the basics! We worked on Bit & Bytes and Operations in Bases other than 10 (LAB00). We figured our how the computer operates on Integers as well as Rationals in Binary. We even worked on Truth Tables and digital Circuit Diagrams!

LAB00 ScreenCasts

Then we started coding Hello World programs (LAB01). These programs are just main() methods with very simple IO. Now, in LAB02, we are working on Object Based Programming: using pre-existing classes in the Java library. We are learning how to Construct, Access and Mutate objects. BTW, we're loving our new c9.io ide from the Amazon Cloud!

CIS(theta), 2018-2019 September Meeting: Administrativa!

CIS(theta), 2018-2019
September MeetingAdministrativa!

(1) Wreath of the Unknown Server: We visited our LAST ever Linux ssh/sftp server, Shadowfax, which is still in Room 429, though dormant. Yes, I'm afraid it's true, all my Linux Boxes have been replaced with WimpDoze!

(2a) Planning: So we have to find an alternative to installing MPI on native Linux! We're thinking Raspbery PIs?
(2b) Research: How do we run MPI under WimpDoze without installing anything? How about MPI4PY? What about Raspberian?
(2c) Reading: In the mean time, here's our first reading assignment.

(3) Display Case Unveiled: We took down a ton of fractal prints and ray tracings from Room 429 to the 2 display cases on the 1st floor near the art wing. We decorated both display cases as best we could and left before anyone saw us. Must have been gremlins. BTW, we also have an HDTV with Chromecast to showcase student work here.

(4) NCSHS: We're going to continue our chapter of the National Computer Science Honor Society. We talked about the requirements for membership and how we started a chapter. Each chapter is called "Zeta Omicron something." We're "Zeta Omicron NY Hopper." This is a pretty new honor society. The first few chapters were called Zeta Omicron Alpha and Omicron Zeta Beta. We have the first NYS chapter! BTW, NCSHS is not to be confused with my Calculus class and the CML. I am also the advisor for the Continental Mathematics League Calculus Division which is like Mathletes with in-house competitions about Calculus. CML is an international competition where we usually place in the top 3 or 4 schools  in the TriState. We've been competing for several years!
