MAT122 SSII 2026 Week 2: Intro To Derivatives

Dear Students,

Wow, we made it! Week Two was a blast!

This week we covered some introductory topics related to Differentiation. We introduced the Difference Quotient definition of the Derivative as the limit of the Secant Line Slopes in order to find a Tangent Line Slope:

Then we found out how the Power Rule for Differentiation works as well a few topics we encountered along the way: Tangent & Normal Line Equations, Pascal's Triangle, nCr, Binomial Expansion Theorem, Mechanics, Galileo's Free Fall Model, Dimensional Analysis, Newton's Method for Finding Radical Roots as Decimals to an arbitrary precision, Pathological Functions, Convergence Tables, TI84-BASIC & Scientific Computing!

See our Screencasts on BrightSpace & YouTube!

Last, but not least, here's this week's Docs! We start each class with a fun Filk or short Documentary related to a specific topic we're learning in class or something related to STEAM.

BTW: I need your Welcome Back BIOs ASAP.  Please read and follow our Syllabus very carefully! You can download these items from our BrightSpace site.

FYI: 100% Attendance is required, you all start with 100 pts as a test grade for attendance. Each absence counts 5 pts and each lateness (arriving late, leaving early) counts 1 pt against this grade. It's an easy 100, don't lose it! You can check your attendance record and grade book on our BrightSpace site.

That's it for now. Enjoy your weekend!

Well, that's all folks!

Be well,

MAT122 SSII 2026 Week 1: Functions & Limits

MAT122 SSII 2026 Week 1: Functions & Limits

Dear Students,

Wow, we made it! Week One is Done and Done!

This week we covered some preCalculus Review topics regarding Functions: Linear, Quadratic, Rational, Inverses, Vertical Line Test, Horizontal Line Test, One-To-One Functions, Domain, Range, Relative Min, Relative Max, Increasing, Decreasing, Asymptotes and Limits!

Note that a standard High School preCalculus class covers at least these 12 chapters:

CHAP01: Functions & Inverse Functions

CHAP02: Linear & Quadratic Functions

CHAP03: Polynomials & End Behavior

CHAP04: Rational Functions & Limits

CHAP05: Exponential & Logarithmic Functions

CHAP06: Right Triangle Trigonometry

CHAP07: non-Right Triangle Trigonometry

CHAP08: Trig Identities & Proofs

CHAP09: Vectors & Complex Numbers

CHAP10: Conics & Polar Coordinates

CHAP11: Matrix Algebra

CHAP12: Introduction to Calculus

We only had just enough time to focus our preCalculus review on Chapters 1-5 plus Chapter 10. We only touched on Chapters 6&9. I'm hoping that's all you need a refresher on to succeed in the rest of this course! We're doing Chapter 12 next week!

See our Screencasts on BrightSpace & YouTube!

Last, but not least, here's this week's Filks! We start each class with a fun Filk or short Documentary related to a specific topic we're learning in class or something related to STEAM.

I need your Welcome Back BIOs ASAP.  Please read and follow our Syllabus very carefully! You can download these items from our BrightSpace site.
