Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week IV

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week IV

We completed our fourth week of new material. We had our 4th test today, good luck! We are back to only a 4-day week and a 4-day unit.

This week was about CH9-11: Trig Identities, Inverse Functions and Rational Functions.

We also had a YouTube Tuesday and Wednesday again! We watched "I Will Derive" and "Calculus Rhapsody" on Tuesday previewing next semester (what Calculus is all about). Wednesday, we watched Will Noel on TED and IGNITE proving that Archimedes discovered Calculus way before Newton did!.

Here's this week's ScreenCasts, SmartNotes and Code, oh my:

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week III

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week III

We completed our third week of new material. We had our 3rd test today, good luck! We finally had only a 4-day week and a 4-day unit.

This week was about CH8: Geometric Transformations of Functions, Trig Graphs, Trig Identities, Degrees vs. Radians, Polar Mode and CIS(theta). Next week we well talk about more Trig Identities as well as Long Term and Short Term limits of Power and Rational Functions (CH9-CH11).

We also had two YouTube Wednesdays! Well, we had a YouTube Tuesday and Wednesday as I was saving my voice (sore throat). We watched "Mathematicious" and Tom Lehrer's "Lobachevsky" on Tuesday. Mathematicious was about the pre-requisites for this course. Lobachevsky was a satire about plagiarism. Wednesday, we watched Grace Murray Hopper interviews, one by Morley Safer and the other on Letterman. Grace, being a great pioneer in the fields of Mathematics and Computer Programming, is one of my presonal idols. All these videos are on YouTube except the one by Morley Safer. You can search for this one on the CBS Rewind website.

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week II

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week II

We completed our second week today of new material. We have our 2nd test tomorrow, good luck! This was a long week as tomorrow is the 4th of July fell on last Thursday. So, we had to have our first test this past Monday and we're making up a day this Friday. As a result, we have a 5 day week. From now one we have only 4-day weeks as well as 4-day units.

This week was about Exponential vs. Logarithmic Functions as well as solving equations graphically and algebraically (CH4+CH5). Next week we are covering Geometric Transformations and Trig Functions (CH6-CH8).

We also had our second YouTube Wednesday yesterday (see above). We talked about Tom Lehrer's "New Math" with respect to round off error on calculator and computers! We also talked about Pi Day.

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week I

Teaching MAT111: preCalculus Week I

We completed our first week today. I think we're off to a great start! It was a short week as tomorrow is the 4th of July. Otherwise, we would have a test every Thursday.

As it stands, next week is going to be a bit crazy with a test Monday for this week's material and a test Friday for next week's topics! Good luck!

This week was about Functions in general and Linear vs. Quadratic Functions in particular (CH1-CH3). Next week will be about Exponential and Logarithmic Functions (CH4-CH5).

We also had our first YouTube Wednesday today (see above). I introduced filk and Tom Lehrer. We also talked about Tau Day.
