MAT225 Multivariable Calculus The Great Theorems! (SSII 2018 - WEEK04)

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus
The Great Theorems!
(SSII 2018 - WEEK04)

(Videos at http://www.patreon.com/calcpage2020)
Week04 started with Line Integrals in the plane to calculate Work and Flux. We practiced Double and Triple Integrals as well as Surface Integrals and Flux Integrals in Space.

We reviewed the Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals then we discovered Green's Theorem for Work in the Plane, Stokes' Theorem for Work in Space and the Diveregence Theorem for Flux in Space.

Actually, we saw both forms of Green's Theorem. The other regards Flux Integrals in the Plane aka Green's Theorem in Normal Form.

We talked about the Divergence Theorem as an experimental result when Gauss was studying Electric Fields so this theorem is also called the Gauss-Green Theorem and leads to Gauss' Law. We finished with a discussion of Maxwell's Equations and how they relate to Gradient Fields as well as the Divergence and Curl of a Vector Field.

We finished the course this week by not testing on Thursday. So, this is our last blog post for the class.

Week05 is all about review and testing. I hope you learned a lot! Have a great rest of the summer!

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus
Iterated & Line Integrals!
(SSII 2018 - WEEK03)

(Videos at http://www.patreon.com/calcpage2020)
Week03 was all about Special Integrals: Double and Line. We used Double Integrals to find Area, Volume and Mass. We also studied Vector Fields and Line Integrals. Then we calculated the Work done by a Vector Field over a path. We even discovered the Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals!

Next week is all about the BIG Three Theorems: Green, Divergence and Stokes. Actually it's 4 theorems since there's two forms of Green's Theorem: Work and Flux!

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus Partial Derivatives! (SSII 2018 - WEEK02)

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus
Partial Derivatives!
(SSII 2018 - WEEK02)

(Videos at http://www.patreon.com/calcpage2020)
Week02 was all about Partial Derivatives and Applications of Partial Derivatives. We practiced finding first and second partials including mixed partials. Then we used the 2nd Partials Test for Optimization and LaGrange Multipliers for Constrained Optimization to optimize functions of the form z=f(x,y) and w=f(x,y,z). We also revisited Lines, Planes and Quadric Surfaces using Traces and Contour Plots!

When you watch our screencasts for this week you may notice that the first 2 are done in a similar style as those from Week01 and our 3rd recording for this week was a bit different. The reason for this is that my Samsung Galaxy NotePro 12.2 fried it's BlueTooth chip right before our first class. So, I ordered a Samsung Chromebook Plus to replace it. I should have had my new device before the first class of Week01 but my Amazon shipment was stolen at the Post Office and had to be reordered a week later???

Anyway, my first 5 recordings this summer were based on my broken tablet without it's Bluetooth Keyboard. That meant that I had to mirror the PC Desktop to my tablet so I could write notes by hand on the tablet as needed but I could also use the PC Keyboard to type code such that my students could see me doing both in the screencast and on the PC Projector and HDTVs all over the lecture hall. To accomplish this I ran TeamViewer, Xournal and SageCell on Chrome from the PC.

Now everything is back to normal as the Chromebook has a very similar look and feel to my tablet but it also has a flip away (ala Lenovo Yoga) keyboard and trackpad attached! All I have to do is mirror my Chromebook to the PC Podium. I'm using Teamviewer, Squid and SageCall on Chrome from the Chromebook. Teamviewer is a little laggy, I may try SplashTop Personal next week. Teamviewer and SplashTop are free to use if both devices are on the same WiFi network.

Next week is all Iterated Integrals, Area, Volume, Mass, Center Of Mass and calculating Work done by a Force Field in the plane! Think of Double Integrals as Partial Derivatives in reverse?

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus Vectors & Matrices! (SSII 2018 - WEEK01)

MAT225 Multivariable Calculus
Vectors & Matrices!
(SSII 2018 - WEEK01)

Week01 went off without a hitch! I think we had a pretty smooth introductory week for our first week of the July session of MAT225 Multivariable Calculus. We had great fun using SAGE as our 3D Grapher and Computer Algebra System instead of a graphing calculator!

"Introductory?" I hear you ask? Well, yes, it was introductory as in the topics should have been mostly review: 2D Vectors, Dot Products, 3D Vectors, Cross Products, Matrices and some Elementary Calculus (see filks below). We also looked at some 3D Graphs and Traces.

Our first test went well. A few students had trouble but they can catch up if they go to the Math Center regularly. I also drop the lowest grade, so there's room to improve!

Next week is all about 3D Graphs and Contour Plots, Partial Derivatives, Optimization, LaGrange Multipliers and the Chain Rule.
